Weather Guard's Next Generation Pack Rat

Weather Guard's Next Generation Pack Rat

Background

In case you didn't know, Pack Rat is Weather Guard's premier drawer storage system. They're extremely popular among commercial vans and trucks, offering secure tool storage with an easy sliding drawer design. With interior dividers and partitions coming standard, the Packrat offers a great alternative to the traditional pickup toolbox and can even be installed on flatbeds or inside of cargo vans. Pack Rats have been around for years, but Weather Guard released their upgraded model in November of 2025, which is the one we are going to discuss in this blog.

Pack Rat Main

Locking Mechanism

The first comparison that we want to make between the new and the old Packrat system is a locking mechanism that they use. The previous generation of Packrats used a plastic button with a separate basic lock. This new model has a much more robust lock push button design which is going to withstand years of abuse.

1Key Compatibility

One of the biggest upgrades to this new edition of the Pack Rat from Weather Guard is the fact that they've brought over their 1Key compatibility to this model, which means that if you've got a 1Key compatible crossover or side-mount toolbox already, you can use that same key on this Pack Rat. This is a major benefit because it limits the amount of keys that you have to carry, and it helps prevent a lockout. If your team's toolboxes are all set to 1Key, this is a major benefit because if somebody forgets a key or loses one, you can quickly borrow someone else's and get into your toolbox and get the job done. The new lock is automotive grade with a metal button that recesses flat whenever it's set to lock. This acts as a quick visual indicator to whether your Pack Rat is actually locked or not. The new internals also feature a one piece bolt and pin, meaning that there's no way it can be separated.

Updated Handle Design

Another upgrade that you may have noticed already on the new Pack Rat is the updated handle design. While the old Pack Rat had a protruding handle that extended past the length of the button, the new Pack Rat's handle design is recessed and extends across the entire front of the drawer. This makes opening the Pack Rat a whole lot easier and leaves a slightly smaller footprint, which is great if you're trying to mount this in a pickup truck bed and you need it as close as you can get it to the tailgate.

Upgraded Rollers

Speaking of opening the Pack Rat, the next improvement that we're going to talk about is the upgraded rollers that Weather Guard is using on this new design. Tested to withstand over 11,000 cycles at full capacity, Weather Guard has ensured their rollers are more than capable of being put to work. There are 4 heavy duty rollers spread across the front of this unit. These new rollers feature upgraded bearings and seals that work together to ensure long-lasting functionality in harsh environments and under heavy loads.

Partitions and Dividers

Now, on the inside, the layout has not changed very much. The new Pack Rats, like the old ones, still contain partitions and dividers so that you can organize and separate your equipment and tools. The big difference is that there are removable partitions, as old Pack Rat partitions are welded in place, limiting your options when it comes to arranging your layout. On the largest model, there are two removable partitions. Once you remove the partitions the space you’re left with is wide enough where you could put a Milwaukee Packout or DeWalt ToughSystem container right inside.

Previous Gen Pack Rat Specs

The old Pack Rats came in a variety of sizes with the largest being 48” deep, 39 ¾” wide, and 13” in height. Made out of 14 gauge steel, they had a total drawer capacity of 425lbs and were able to hold a maximum of 750lbs stacked on top.

New Pack Rat Specs

The new Pack Rat dials this up quite a few notches with the largest unit offered now coming in at 72” deep, 49 ½” wide, and 13” tall. If you're looking for a superior storage solution, you're definitely in luck. Retaining its 14 gauge steel construction, the total drawer capacity stays the same at 425 lbs. But the big change is now any model that's at least 48” long by 39 ¾” wide can hold up to 2,000lbs on top. This huge increase in strength is due to the more robust skids that are in use underneath these units, as well as an improved structure on the inside of the drawer.

Testing the Design

When it comes to quality assurance, you can be sure Weather Guard has not cut any corners when designing this new Pack Rat. These new units have been impact tested, weather tested, and road tested. During the testing stage of this design, units had their drawer and top-load weight capacity maxed out. They were then put on a simulator that mimics a bumpy road where they had to withstand 40,000 simulated miles without any defect. It's safe to say that these units passed with flying colors!

Conclusion
