What to Know Before You Order Equipment

Every truck bed looks pretty much the same from the driver's seat. It's not until you start speccing out a toolbox, hitch, or rack that you realize how much variation there actually is between wheel well shape, bed lip style, tailgate design, hitch prep, and drainage layout. Small details, but they're the difference between equipment that bolts on clean and equipment that needs a workaround.

This guide walks through the truck bed basics worth understanding before you place an order, whether you're outfitting your own work truck or specing equipment across a whole fleet.

1. Wheel Wells

Wheel well shape has a big impact on equipment because it defines how much usable flat space you have on either side of the bed.

Most commonly, the wheel well sits inside the bed rail, so the bed floor stays flat and open outside of it. However, knowing your configuration helps you choose the right toolbox style. A full-width crossover box needs enough flat space between the wheel wells to sit level, while a narrower or gullwing-style box can work around tighter wheel well spacing.

A few measurements worth having on hand before ordering:

  • Width between the wheel wells, measured inside-to-inside
  • Height of the wheel well hump, especially if you're considering a low-profile or full-width set-up
  • Distance from the wheel well to the front of the bed and to the tailgate, which matters for drawer systems, service bodies, and rack mounting points

If your fleet runs a mix of makes and models, it's worth building a quick reference sheet with these measurements for each truck platform you run.

2. Bed Lips and Rail Style

Most toolboxes, headache racks, and bed rail accessories clamp onto the bed's top rail. The shape of that rail is what determines whether a clamp-style mount will sit flush and secure.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Lip shape varies: Some beds have a rolled lip, others a squared C-channel profile, and some have a raised bed rail cap. Each shape interacts a little differently with clamp hardware.
  • Composite beds behave differently than steel beds: Several GM and Ram trucks use composite bed rails with a slightly different profile than traditional stamped steel. Clamp hardware sized for steel doesn't always seat the same way on composite.
  • Factory bed rail caps add height and width: A truck that has plastic bed caps has extra material which can change how a clamp-style toolbox sits.

3. Tailgate Design

Tailgates have gotten more sophisticated over the last several years, which means there's more to consider than there used to be.

  • Standard drop tailgates: The most straightforward and compatible with nearly all accessories, though it's still worth checking where any cables or straps run if you're adding a step or rack extension.
  • Power tailgates: These house a motor and wiring harness inside the tailgate itself, which can affect fitment for aftermarket steps, locks, or seals.
  • Multi-function tailgates: GM's MultiPro, Ford's Pro Access (some higher trims add a center swing-out section), and RAM's Multi-Function (available with a 60/40 split) all have moving parts and a bit less clearance to work with.
  • Tailgate locks and security hardware: Should be checked against backup camera wiring, which typically routes through or near the tailgate hinge.

Practically, tailgates have a rated weight capacity for a reason. If your crew tends to use the tailgate as a step or work surface, it's worth confirming the rating for your specific truck so it holds up the way it's meant to.

4. Gooseneck & 5th Wheel Hitch Balls

For fleets that tow regularly, hitch setup is one of the more detail-oriented parts of speccing a truck, but it's very manageable once you know what to check.

  • Hitch placement relative to the rear axle: This matters for towing balance. Gooseneck balls generally need to sit centered over or very near the rear axle centerline.
  • Factory gooseneck prep: This is common on trucks built with towing in mind. Many come with a factory-drilled puck system already in the bed floor. If yours has one, you'll want a hitch ball designed for that puck spacing rather than a universal under-bed rail kit, since the two aren't interchangeable.
  • Short beds often call for a slider hitch: On 5.5' or 6.5' beds, a fixed 5th wheel hitch can contact the cab during sharp turns, so a slider is usually the better fit for those bed lengths.

If you also have a toolbox or fuel tank, it's worth checking that it won't interfere with the gooseneck hitch head or 5th wheel plate once everything is installed.

5. Toolbox Height and Rear Visibility

This one's easy to overlook, but it's worth genuine consideration: how much of your rear sightline a toolbox takes up.

Larger toolboxes (full-size crossover or chest-style boxes especially) sit higher in the bed, which can reduce how much you see out the back window and through your mirrors. For drivers who back into tight loading docks, alleys, or residential driveways regularly, this is worth factoring into the decision.

A few things to consider:

  • Low-profile toolboxes: Built specifically to sit below the truck's rear window sightline, which keeps visibility closer to what you're used to without a box installed.
  • Backup cameras: These can also be affected by toolbox height and placement. It's worth checking the angle before finalizing your setup, especially on trucks where the camera sits near or above the tailgate.
  • Company safety policy: Some fleets have internal guidelines around rear visibility for insurance or safety purposes, so it's worth checking whether that applies before finalizing a taller toolbox.
  • Combined height: If a toolbox is paired with a ladder rack or headache rack, keep in mind the visual impact of the two together.

6. Stake Pockets, Drain Holes, and Bed Floor Layout

A few more details that round out the picture:

  • Stake pocket size and spacing: Varies by manufacturer and are worth checking if you're mounting a stake-pocket-based rack, bed extender, or tie-down system.
  • Bed floor drain holes: These matter when installing a bed liner, mat, or sealed storage system. It's worth confirming the layout doesn't block factory drainage.
  • Liner type (spray-in vs. drop-in): Affects how clamp-style toolboxes and hitch hardware seat, sometimes needing adjusted hardware or spacers.
  • Exact bed length: Confirm against the manufacturer's spec sheet rather than the general "6.5-foot bed" label, since small tolerances do vary between manufacturers.
